2015 COMET AWARD
The Palomar College Foundation Comet Award annually recognizes community members who, through their personal and professional achievements, have had a positive impact on our community and on the promotion of education.
President, adidas-Group North America
Chairman, TaylorMade Golf Company
Mark King, this year’s Comet Award honoree, has been an inspiration for the future since he began working as a sales person at Carlsbad-based TaylorMade Golf in 1981. He rose to president of the company (1999), CEO (2002), and as of April 2014 president of adidas-Group North America. Yet the title in which he takes equal pride is “community catalyst,” reflecting both his corporate and personal commitment to North County and the world at large. Mark King believes that great products and great communities come from great people, and he has consistently invested in nurturing the growth and excellence of individuals within his company and his community.
King is an in-demand speaker for corporate and other events around the country. He is renowned as not only an entertaining speaker, but also as an innovative organizational leader and a force for creative disruption in the golf industry.
Despite the demanding schedule that went with being CEO of TaylorMade, King invested his time and effort in many North County nonprofit organizations including the Palomar College Foundation, Solutions for Change (where he serves as chair of the Leadership Team), and the Carlsbad Boys & Girls Club. He is a board member for The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Mark brought to each of these groups his people skills, organizational knowledge, and strong belief in creating opportunities for everyone to excel.
Mark King and TaylorMade Golf have been long-time advocates of student success at Palomar College through their support of individual sports teams and contributions to our annual President's Invitational Golf Classic. Their involvement in this annual event has inspired more than $1 million in community support that has provided assistance to many hundreds of students.
Most of King’s speaking fees go to charity. His passion for giving has in turn inspired philanthropic support and volunteer participation from employees, colleagues, family and friends, much to the benefit of North County and Palomar College. Though now a resident of Portland, Oregon, Mark King maintains close ties to North County and has an active interest in its people and institutions. He remains on the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Advisory Board.
For his many community contributions and ongoing inspiration for the future, we are pleased and proud to name Mark King the 2015 Palomar College Foundation Comet Award honoree.
